Fictional Stories

Restless for Whanregoon

The goldfields hold adventure and freedom most can only dream about. Set in the 1990s Frank and Brian Champion are middle aged brothers living a self-reliant life gold prospecting and mining in regional Victoria. Living onsite in a small hut the brothers live a happy and secluded life until trouble comes from the outside world, forcing them from their home.

As the last survivors in their mining family they discover they have inherited a house in Ballarat, with debt they can't pay off. Surrounded by eccentric neighbours who know their every thought and move the despair grows. Made worse when they're forced onto welfare and assigned help from the same family who forced them from their mine and home to begin with.

But gold miners are dreamers and opportunists. When they stumble onto some ancient mine plans and diaries they can't resist the chance and they embark upon a journey that will either kill or free them. What have they got to lose?

A Tiger for Whanregoon

The empty days of summer had Whanregoon residents contemplating decline. The roaring days of Henry Lawson’s goldfields are long gone. But things change. An eccentric resident’s idea to promote tourism with gold nuggets is seized upon while a local miner recognises a con man moving into town. Trouble is on the horizon as an influx of gangsters and no good locals are seen in company, but they will soon learn the danger of dismissing Whanregoon’s disarmingly calm but dangerously bored citizens.

Caught in the middle, the new town cop finds official law is smiled upon with tolerance, especially by elderly ladies lost in a more gracious age, or an assertive young woman who flies a Tiger Moth.

This is historic Whanregoon where visitors can be embraced or suffer inventive mayhem. ‘There are never any witnesses’ is said by all with a welcoming smile and gold is still an adventure.
